How to teach Maths to Kinesthetic Learners

How to teach elementary Maths to Kinesthetic Learners

To begin learning numbers, one way to start is by drawing boxes with number on the floor using chalks. By shouting out a question, the children can try to jump to the correct number box.

Why children do not speak to their parents

1. they do not find it meaningful

2. they do not feel their parents would listen

3. they fear their parents' reaction

4. they do not feel their parents' care

Foolishness vs Childishness

Evolving relationship

1) lead by influence/example

2) Interaction

3) Impartation

Reach the heart of your child

1. Credibility

2. Teach a responsibility

3. Show interest in them

4. Show/tell them they are loved

5. Guard your tongue & your tone

what makes learning challenging for your child

Applying Strategies for Auditory, Visual and Kinaesthetic learners

My personal observation after putting my boy who is totally a non-auditory learner  through the education here.

In Singapore, education method is mainly in auditory format. In primary school education, the children are usually arranged in a classroom all (40 of them) facing the teacher in rows and columns. Very minimum interaction is allowed between the children. Most of the time, the teacher will do the teaching and the children the listening.
This is the most traditional teaching method.
However, in a population, what is the percentage of children being a auditory learner is unknown. No study was conducted.

Although the modern teachers educated in teaching and education university undergraduate environment, most still do not know how to help kinaesthetic learners. They build in so-called outside-classroom learning time but the method is still very traditional, even on a outing to Chinatown, the children are still handed pieces of paper to complete with wordings.

I am doing more reading on this and will write more soon.

attitude vs belief

attitude governs actions

belief governs behaviors

learn to ask the right questions WHY vs WHAT

Principles of Instruction

1. say what you mean & mean what you say

2. show consideration

3. allow for appeal

other considerations:

- encouragment (put courage into)

- correction

My experience with a helper

This helper is from country P.
Usually we do not enlist the helper from them as there is quite a big culture difference bet us.
However, bcoz my previous helper from country was bullied by my mil's helper from I, I thought a helper from another country will help them to respect one another.
True enough, these 2 get along so well from day 1, that my new helper R decided to camp next door at my mil's place 24 hrs a day with very minimum housework done at home. She even retorted to cook inedible dinner such that we packed food from outside daily.

Not only that, she attempted to use our laptop at home and caused the laptop's hard drive and a portable hard drive damage.
She broke a tap and a door stopper in the short time span of 2 months.
In the end, we had to let her go. She lasted a year.

monopoly singpost sucks

i hardly write negative blog about sg
about today i hv to do it
hoping to help improve the level of competence in this tiny island

Dear CEO BT Lau

Subject: Lost mail/time to train your staff

What: Item posted 6 Nov 11:45am at Newton Post Office

When: Postage was also bought at the outlet at around 11:40am. On that day, I requested the counter staff to take the item as it was slightly thicker than a normal mail and worried about breaking if I dropped into the letter box.

However, I was told that singpost no longer accept mail through counter.

To date, item was not received by recipent.

As I am operating a business that required posting of items to customers, this incident has created a very bad reputation for me. It affected my business operation.

I wrote in on 13 Nov via the internet feedback.

On 16 Nov, I called singpost hotline to register my concern for any recourse.

To my horror, the officer Ms Jen Hua was totally unhelpful. Her immediate reaction was there is no way to help. This is without even asking about the situation. I have evidence that the postage was purchased and posted on the spot. I would at least expect the Ms Jen to advise me on what i need to do if she cannot help me. However, she can even tell me that if it is not registered, nothing can be done.

Even if the item is lost during postal service, the minimum I would expect will be Singpost acknowledgement to the item being lost under their care. But why did I get the feeling that they are trying to push away the responsibilities. Only upon my unhappy tone that they should at least investigate the case, did the officer asked me to submit a feedback via internet, only then is it possible for them to investigate. Tell me, what is the purpose of having a call-in hotline?

As a customer with a lost mail, how will you feel if you are in my shoes to be given such response? In today environment, who is going to compensate for my losses? Who is going to answer for bring the bread to the table?

Of course I am anxious.

I have a photo of the item taken just before it was dropped into the letter box. I am not posting her to protect my customer's privacy.

I am also shocked to find so many complaints online.

And there is nothing we can do because SingPost is a monopoly.

Not only that, they always suggest registered post, meaning adding more cost to the customers, does it make sense?

Are you saying that the basic business model of posting cannot be trusted?

Have you forgotten your pledge of service?

Thoughts on GEP

There are 2 schools of thots on the good & bad points of GEP.
Today i would like to discuss one of these thots, that it is better not to be in. Generally pple who speak out loud that not getting into GEP is good, others may said they are sour grapes (吃不到葡萄说葡萄酸). Of course I don't deny there are bound to be detractors. However, if we take the stand of positive view, there are valid points to this thot that not getting into GEP is good.

In reality, there is only 1% chance that a child is gifted. Hence it is 可遇不可求! The gifted trait is natural and not nurture. So considered it lucky if your child belong to 1% of the cohort. Isnt it better than striking toto? So in a school with 30% of the students considered gifted and getting into GEP, arent the 29% all forced? Forcing a child unduly may backfire. There is also the worry that they become anti-social like a lot of stories going round that students from GEP classes are nerd, cant socialize, cant solve real life problems.

Although gifted in in-born, this is not saying nurture is useless. Nurture can improve weakness or strengthen a strength.

Perhaps the term GEP is inappropriate. Since GEP measures the linguistic, mathematical & general knowledge ability. The term to use maybe more appropriate with academic gifted program (AGP).

Alternatively,  we hear a lot of stories about gifted people not sociable. Maybe a way to measure gifted is thru social ability?

we will cover thot 2 in next article....

I must blog about the drop in service of ikea

2 weeks ago...i was at the tampines outlet trying to get a high stool
i searched around but couldnt find it
so i managed to stop a staff to ask for help.
i was told to try check-out counter...diligently i went
which i was earlier but didnt see it...
at the check-out counter, searching the whole row of check-out and still didn't see it, i stopped another staff to ask
he told me to try the bathroom section, which is a long walk back since i need to pass 20+ racks
at the bathroom section, i couldnt find anyone to help me
finally i managed to find a lady staff at fabric....she didn't allow me to finish my question and told me to go children section....
which is one level up.....i was desperate by then....i came all the way and walked so much....i must find it.....
off i went to climbing up the stair....
at the children section, i stopped a really young looking staff
he told me....we only have this $3.90 stool (which is not what i was looking for)
by then, i was about to give up....i went back down.....
about to go home and thought i gave a final try to this lady staff doing some deco on ladder
low and behold....she was able to tell me "if i m not wrong, it is out of stock"
gosh.....it took so many staff to tell me such a simply thing?
i am very disappointed.....

fast forward to today
i was there making some purchases
i have written my requirement on the paper provided in-house
this particular item need sale assistant help according to the tag
so i spent 15 mins locating one....
she looked at the paper i had and made some calls
and finally printed the payment slip for me to bring check-out for 2 items
i made a total of almost $700 worth of about 10 items....another delivery charge payment
and imagine my surprise when i took out the receipt during dinner to have a look
the item keyed in by the  staff is wrong.....

so i quickly went home to call ikea
and mine mine.....the customer service line is busy i was put on hold for at least 10mins with no response
i hung up and call again....this time....the lady told me to leave my number as they were experiencing high call levels......and will return my call
one hour later....no sound no picture of ikea!!!
although i can choose to return after the item is delivered
but imagine the additional effort required to do that?
and mind you....i paid for delivery....

what a lousy experience....

Creating a Conducive Learning Environment

  • show interest in your child's learning experiences and encourage him/her to share them with you
  • Encourage your child to learn through meaningful games
  • Read books and newspaper together, starting with attractive illustrations
  • Bring your child to the library or bookshops to cultivate reading habit
  • Watch quality television programmes together
  • make use of objects in the environment such as road signs and advertisements to engage your child
  • build up your child's confidence by not correcting his/her mistakes excessively

Raising Happy Kids

As parents, we want our children to experience a well-balanced development and most importantly, to be happy while doing so.
Here are some useful suggestions

Connections

Children need unconditional love from one or both parents and benefit when they have close ties to their extended family, feel part of their school, and help care for pets.

Play

Open-ended play, in which children can invent scenarios and solve problems by themselves, helps them discover their talents and use their own resources.

Practice

When kids find out what they're good at, they'll want to do it again and again.

Mastery

From practice comes mastery. When children achieve a skill -- whether it's learning to tie their shoes or play the piano -- they're further motivated to tackle new challenges.

Recognition

Approval from one's parents, teachers, and peers for a job well done connects children to the wider world. When kids think what they do affects others, they're more likely to exhibit moral behavior and, ultimately, to feel good about themselves.

Queuing

there is this rhythm

cut queue bbq let the fire burn on u

to see how gracious is a country
look at how the pple live in their daily life

do pple queue?
or they just do as they like
the survivor of the one with the brutal force

in singapore....although u noticed pple do queue up generally when buying lottery, food...
but it is a different story when it comes to driving...
either they are not prepared in their route
or they simply just like to cut queue

& there are another type...who simply like to speed up when driver's signal to change lane
especially when there is a need to change lane for turning purpose...

it is against basic courtesy idea
i thought when someone signal, it is more polite than someone who juz butt in???
such actions left my scratching my head....how to teach them gracious / kindness action?

are you guilty of such an action?
why don't you try to give way the next time when someone
trust me...the feeling is good when you do that....

give them room to grow

children need a lot of space to discover & develop their talents
do not stifle their potential by restricting them things that they can do

i personally go for the 'cast a wide net' opinion
yes! time is limited
there is only 24 hours in a day
do let them try as many as things as possible
remember, i did not say EVERY thing
take for example musical instrument....
i know many parents will 'force' ( encourage) their children to take up piano or violin at a young age
but why not expose them to all sort of instruments first....
they may have talent in drums instead :-)
or is it a wishful part of mine...lols

Fever Day 3

Thank God
boy went to bed with 38.5 degree and
the fever went down throughout the night
by day time, his fever has come down nicely....
hovering around 37.5
i am so glad...
we continue with tamiflu
and as of now...temp is within 37.0 range
thou he appeared tired and sleepy....

Fever Day 2.2

GP warned me about some possible side effects of tamiflu
true enough....
boy felt dizzy and tummyache after the 1st dosage this afternoon
he vomited around 7pm....
hopefully he will be alright after a good nite sleep

Fever Day 2.1

the fever continued to rage upwards in the afternoon
and did not seem to want to retreat
i called up the clinic and spoke to another GP on duty
and after discussion, the GP wanted to take a look at boy
we rushed to the clinic and after observing him for a while (temp was 39.5)
tamiflu was prescribed as a precautionary measure
the GP recommended to take within the 1st 2 days onset of fever
and boy seems a bit listless and confused too

we started first dose of tamiflu at 4:30pm...
it went much smoothly then i thought
i guess boy must be feeling real bad that he is willing to take the medication....
by night time, fever is still hovering around 38.5...
i gave him another dosage of nurofen to take care of fever at 8:45pm
at 10pm, i gave him tamiflu again
he went to bed after that.....

pray for recovery soon....

like it or not...your child learns from adults around him/her
be a role model to children.....
if you don't want your child to scream at you, make sure you don't do it to your parent/s (in front of them). S/he won't be able to understand why you can do it and they can't.

Mutliple intelligences

i came across this theory last year when i started to research on my boy's education
now i am reading more into this...
there are many different types

the most common is

1. Linguistic intelligence ("word smart"):

the rest are
Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart")
Spatial intelligence ("picture smart")
Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart")
Musical intelligence ("music smart")
Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart")
Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
Naturalist intelligence ("nature smart")

Safety tips in the swimming pool

here are some impt ways to keep your child safe in the pool:

1) always accompany them when they are near or in the water.
2) keep an eye on them at all times.
3) use floats and stay near the shallow end
4) no running or pushing near the pool

children are slower to realise dangerous situations and therefore more prone to injuries.

every child is talented

do not assume that they are lousy when they don't meet the grades in school...there are many more types of
intelligent than you can imagine....
Below is an extract from Psychologist Howard Gardner:
1. Linguistic
Children with this kind of intelligence enjoy writing, reading, telling stories or doing crossword puzzles.
2. Logical-Mathematical
Children with lots of logical intelligence are interested in patterns, categories and relationships. They are drawn to arithmetic problems, strategy games and experiments.
3. Bodily-Kinesthetic
These kids process knowledge through bodily sensations. They are often athletic, dancers or good at crafts such as sewing or woodworking.
4. Spatial
These children think in images and pictures. They may be fascinated with mazes or jigsaw puzzles, or spend free time drawing, building with Leggos or daydreaming.
5. Musical
Musical children are always singing or drumming to themselves. They are usually quite aware of sounds others may miss. These kids are often discriminating listeners.
6. Interpersonal
Children who are leaders among their peers, who are good at communicating and who seem to understand others' feelings and motives possess interpersonal intelligence.
7. Intrapersonal
These children may be shy. They are very aware of their own feelings and are self-motivated.

Bullies at school

my little one was pushed and punched recently in school by a boy from another class.
he is of a smaller size and has quite a bit of strength bcos my boy was bleeding from the nose and crying at the same time.
Luckily, there was a parent who happened to be around and rendered help to him.
the school only called after the bleeding stopped.

fighting in school is inevitable...especially young boys in a boys' school

but instilling the right values are necessary both on the part of the school (principle, vp, teachers and general staff) and parents.

what made me unhappy with the whole incident was the reaction of form teacher of the offender. I can understand her protection over her students, however, she actually said they are still investigating the case for the following reasons
1) the boy was diagnosed as a hyperactive kid and hence couldnt control his actions
2) the boy said my boy was in his way

My rebuttal to these are
1) my boy is also a hyperactive kid (tell me in today term, which boy is not hyperactive). Being diagnosed with hyperactive 'disease' does not give you the right to go round hitting people. mind you, it is not a slight slap or kick. He came from below (as he is smaller in size) and punched my boy up in the nose. To me, it seems like a planned action. If the condition is serious till the offender is not able to control his action, then is it better to keep him away from such school environment?

2) no matter what is the reason behind, the person who started the fight is at fault. Have you heard of any criminal getting away stabbing someone and claiming the victim was wrong. Irregardless of investigation, a warning and punishment to the offender is necessary right there and there. If you let the matter rests for a while, he will not understand why he is being punish later. if you do not give a stern warning about such actions right on the spot, you are 'breeding' a hooligan behaviour right at the school compound.

I personally do not tolerate such behaviour!

Moreover, after some questionings around myself, i discovered that my boy is not at fault at all.
The judgement of offender is totally out. Finally, he was given 3 days of detention. I hope he learns his lesson, better late than never.

During the past few days, my boy's nose bridge developed a big bruise, he refused to see a doctor for consultation. He is already suffering from sinus problem, I pray to God that this will not cause further permanent damages to his nose. Throughout the unfolding of events, the parents of the offender never attempt to offer any apology at all.

So does your child know how to deal with bully in school? Mine obviously didn't know as he didn't retaliate (react) at all when he was punched. Maybe the pain was too acute for him to react except to cry.

We as parents can do a bit to help, but make sure we do not embarrass them or make it a habit of helping out everytime.

Talk to them about bullying. Give them scenarios to help them open up and share (fears and feelings). Make sure they know that the bully is the one at the wrong.

Encourage them to approach teachers, principal to share what is going on instead of talking to the principal on their behalf. They can report to you after that.

The main aim is to teach the child how to work through their problems with bully instead of resolving for them.

Natural Disasters

in my course of work, I have been to Chengdu at least 20 times
i have also the opportunity to go dujiangyan, jiuzhaigou, panda nature reserve etc
these are all so close to the epi-centre, wolong panda nature reserve is only 30km away...
i sadden me to see such a bad earthquake to hit this part of the country which is so close to my heart
i thank God for the blessings i have
appreciaion for all the blessings we have here
my heart goes out to those people in Sichuan province
and to those who are badly hit / affected by this natural disaster
God Bless

what is beautiful to you.....

to me it is when you get to see falling leaves with sunlight as the backdrop on your way home from work in the evening....

i love my country...but am getting frustrated...

anyone can provide the statistics on the # of cars on the road at any one time vs public buses?

in normal 3 lanes road, one is delicated to buses....it is called the BUS LANE....you get a fine if u drive on that lane....but at any one time....the other 2 lanes are jam pack with cars for at least 5km while there is not a single bus in sight....

is it an efficient use of resources????

i know the agrument is to encourage pple to give up cars and take public transport...but aren't u (the policy maker...yes you....i'm talking to u) a car-driver too....will u give up your car.....if u can't, why expect others?

well....my agrument is....we work hard...we use our intelligent, our time, our energy.....all our resources to achieve whatever we have to be driving on the road...in our own car.....compared to pple who choose to take the public transport....

experience or knowledge

i am curious....do most people think experience is more impt or knowledge is more important...
of course the best is both....but then it is not easy to 'have the cake and eat it'
i am more slanted towards experience as experience really helps to avoid mistakes while if without experience, the next best is to gather as much knowledge as possible....
but certain things do not allowed for experience....it is like once in a lifetime...
haiya....this topic is getting too heavy....

that's me...

You like to give people advice, dear Libra, and help them find direction in your lives... (Sometimes when they haven't even asked). But now, it's your turn to feel a little lost. You may need to get away from it all to get some perspective on your life. What about taking a trip to some faraway land? Today is a good day to make your vacation plans.

what is this life?

i have been questioning my existence
so can i do to be more meaningful
to contribute to to this world...
instead of living a mundane existence...
come and go without a trace...

don't get me wrong....i don't want to be a hero
and don't want to be someone with a big name...
i just want to make a difference to everything and everyone i meet in my life
even a slight one....make a better difference

in fact...that's why i am staying on in my job...
thou many many people including my colleagues told me to seek for greener pasture (better compensation)
but to me....money is not everything.....although financial independent is :-)

Leave margin in life….

Don’t rush from appointment to appointment, leave time gap in between to catch your breath…

i think this entry serves to remind myself more than you who are reading...

no more

after spending much time shifting and moving my things
i have decided that i will not buy any more shoes, clothes and bags for this year...
luckily there is only one more month to go...till the end of the year...
else I wonder how i survive without shopping....cant blame me....i am a woman!

but on a serious note, i desperately need to look for something that can nourish my heart...
not shopping...not endless buying....yes....it is called shopping therapy....but it only heals temporary...
it is not healthy for long term....so now....my objective is to list down the things to do that can make me heart...i think one of them must be making others happy

hmmm

what to say....many things are happening...

and i don't know where to start

but generally my heart is not happy...

why....and i don't know why....

or do i know why...but don't want to share?

i m not sure what i am living for....

life seems so meaningless....

i am like a walking zoombie...

but then i find this entry so depressing that i think i should stop now....

Accident prone

Sigh....this is the nail that got into my foot on Sunday
Slight more than a year ago, I sprained my ankle on this exact spot...at the bottom of the stair....and yesterday I got this rusty tiny little nail into my right foot at the top of the stair. The pain is slightly bearable compared to the sprained ankle, but the implication is unknown....
In the end, I got to get a jab on my arm, antibiotics 5 days course, anti-swelling medication and cream based on doc's advise.
What luck am i going thru'.....after harddisk and memory cards reader episode....pray for good luck....

high maintainence

work has not been going smoothly for me
it may be coined as a happy problem 'demand exceeded supply many times'
and without warning...so we are unable to supply based on our earlier marketing effort
but i faced the customers daily
their unhappiness, unable to comprehend....bcos i can't tell them we can't support the demand...
being in marketing...i have to put it in a very 'quality' way....
but it is like putting my reputation at stake...
being me....i just don't like that feeling
i was the one marketing to them...telling them the information
now with changes internally....i have to change my statement...
the feeling isn't great...bcos i m a lousy liar...

and then i have been feeling this pain in my knee...there is no significant sign of bruises on the knee...
but i felt sharp pain when i walk or take the stair....
and i can't bend my knee....i juz don't know what is happening in my life...

so i took half a off from work today after getting a earful from the customers this morning
i decided to chop off my reasonably long hair....
and while doing my hair...decide to pamper myself and go for pedicure
it is my first time and the feeling was great...
the only imperfection is that i couldn't choose a bright red nail paint
bcos i totally forgot...until the pedicure lady reminded me that i have a broken toenail (outcome of my trip to kathmandu)
it is a pity that my digital camera is not working
else i would take some nice pretty toes to show off :-p

if u were to ask me "are you a high maintainence person today?"
i will surely tell you "yes, i am" :)
at least for that moment....it is like....why am i working so hard....if i don't pamper myself...

so sad

it is such a sad day for me....
i broke my digital camera today
sob sob....
no picture from now on until i get my new camera
it was already half gone....and i was trying to take a picture when the len refused to return to off position
while trying to replace the battery
i dropped the camera again
this time, the len is broken and could take any more picture
and it can't retract back to off position
look like i really messed it up....so sad....

tv

a friend of mine who is in the hotel business
was very surprised when he learnt that i do not switch on tv in the hotel room
wherever i stayed....
again i 'm the adnormal customer...
i even hate it when the tv automatically turn on whenever i slot in the room key....
I told him i didn't like it....first thing i do is to go and turn it off....
am i a freak?

Thursday, May 24, 2007

i'm a freak

& a complete freak for that matter
i don't know....i just don't act according to pple expectation
i like to do things out of ordinary....
and get on majority of the pple nerve
so since i don't live up to the majority expectation - norm behavior...
i myself decided i'm a freak instead of labelling the others as freak

worse trip experience at the bkk airport

first the transit at suvarnabhumi airport in bkk
well...i must say it really gives me a very bad impression...
our gate of arrival is C
the other gate is E....
so based on logic...how far can E be from C...
C...D....E....right
but i think E is right at the other end of E...
and there wasn't any layout nor signal to signal that E is very very very very very far.....
during the last 2 trips....they are all pretty nearby....
so we walked and walked and walked....then we start to run....bcos we missed the 10 mins gate close before departure time....
gate E is at least 1 km away from C!!!!
and we have to walk thru the huge shopping area inside the airport....
there is no travellator....just crowd of pple...that we need to navigate...
some monuments in the ways....
cafe in the middle blocking....
rows of shops on both sides...
finally when we reach the clearance area...
the system is paging for us....
the whole plane is waiting for us....they will wait...i'm not worried
bcos they know we are in the airport....our luggages are loaded...
they don't want to waste the time removing it from the cargos....
but it is a bad experience....overall

why i have a sweet tooth

my excuse
life is bitter enough….why put more bitter into it???

It's May....

Today...my horoscope reads....

Your mind is in great turmoil right now, dear Libra, so it's not surprising that you can't pay much attention to anything. It's as though your conception of the world has been inexorably changed, and you see your love life and career with new eyes. Even so, you feel compelled to pick up the pieces of the past and save them. The day ahead should help you let go of the old world.

sometimes i wonder why it is so accurate....

actually...i wanted to write about something else...in another blog...which i write once a month (at least) in the beginning of the month...i drafted it...i wanted to give up on something...but i don't know what is stopping me...i am in a dilemma...i know what i should do....but i'm not doing it....hence the title...it's May....

appreciation

my job brings me around the world working
i was recently in delhi, india
the temp can go as high as 43 degree cel
and there are power shortage
mind you...it is not even the peak of summer
being born and bred in Singapore
that makes me really appreciate what we have here
and in a way....reluctant to venture abroad
unless things are in ideal settingbut is there?
we do have our fair share of unhappiness here
especially over freedom and control
but life is never perfect
be content no matter where you are...
always look at the positive side of things
and everything will turn out rosy in your eyes

am i getting old

so much to write but so little time
i opened up a new entry page as something came into my mind
just was about to start writing...
someone walked in and had a chat...
the next moment...the writing, the topic and the passion were gone
i can't even remember what was it that i wanted to write on
although moments ago...i felt it so strongly that i wanted to pen it down
how i wish someone can invent a small little electronic notebook that can note down all my thots
so many things come to my mind when i was taking my shower...when i was driving...when i was having lunch...but i just didn't have the chance to write them down....and i can't recall a thing minutes later...
why is that so? am i getting old?

Jealousy at work

jealousy is such a scary thing
why do i always encounter it...
do i really look so confident on the outside...
do i really attract the envy of pple surrounding me...
why do they always say things that hurt...
most recent case, a long time friend of mine A was 'shocked' to hear that i'm doing a master program...
i heard this from another friend B....
B said that A was not happy....said that I hide from her...
but B reminded her that I did say i am doing a course...
it is A who didn't ask and assume...
anyway...since I have my bachelor...of course the next to do is master...
what's the big deal...why shd A had such a big reaction? is jealous at work?
A is always the one who will be sarcastic towards me over minor things...
anyway....i took them along my stride...that's life...i just know that in my story, she is the villian character...heehee
